Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Working to achieve the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is a shared responsibility: every country, every business, and every one of us. At Polar Seafood, we take this responsibility seriously.

In an industry where integrity, accountability, and credibility are essential, Polar Seafood has long focused on sustainability through MSC certification of fish and shellfish and responsible practices across our operations. It is therefore natural that the UN SDGs serve as a guiding framework in our decision-making. This applies to everyday actions whether we are fishing, processing, packing, selling, or distributing our products.

We recognise that all 17 UN SDGs are important. To make the greatest possible impact, we have identified three key areas where Polar Seafood can contribute most effectively. These areas reflect our ambition to create real change and support a sustainable future for generations to come.

Quality education

Polar Seafood believes that high-quality education is essential for sustainable development. As Greenland’s largest privately owned company, we take responsibility for supporting education and contributing to the development of Greenlandic society. We also ensure that our employees across the group have the skills they need by offering continuous training opportunities.

To strengthen education, Polar Seafood has developed a trainee programme in collaboration with educational institutions in Greenland and The Nordic Countries. A programme designed to develop the future officers both professionally and personally. Additionally, our offices also have trainees in areas such as IT, procurement, and logistics, who are trained and educated within their fields of specialization at Polar Seafood.

Responsible consumption and production

Responsibility and integrity have always been central to the way Polar Seafood operates. As pressure on the world’s natural resources increases, we are committed to developing within responsible production and consumption. These resources must be preserved for the benefit of future generations.

One initiative was the transition at our Esbjerg factory to recyclable monoplastic bags for our shrimp, making it easier for consumers to sort and recycle the packaging. This process also proved to result in energy savings in the production of the bags.

Life below water

Marine life is a cornerstone of sustainable development for us, and the growing global demand for sustainable fishing reflects this priority. Through the MSC certification of some of our products, Polar Seafood has worked towards this goal for many years and welcomes the increasing demand.

Caring for marine resources is a Greenlandic tradition passed down through generations, based on the understanding that overexploitation leads to hunger. With roots in Greenland, Polar Seafood proudly carries this principle of natural sustainability into modern, industrialised fishing.
