Examples of our initiatives:
In 2006, Polar Seafood’s late president, Kjeld Holmstrup, initiated the collaboration that led to the establishment of Sustainable Fisheries Greenland in 2012. Today, the association brings together fishers, researchers and the industry to support work related to MSC certification of Greenlandic fisheries.
In 2025, Polar Seafood was closely involved in the MSC re-certification process for the Greenland lumpfish fishery. This included a site visit to Polar Raajat’s factory in Nuuk, where the assessment team reviewed the production of lumpfish roe.
Polar Seafood representatives participate in working groups established by Greenland’s Department of Fisheries, Hunting, Agriculture and Self-Sufficiency. In 2025, this included work on the revision of the management plan for the West Greenland shrimp fishery.
Through Sustainable Fisheries Greenland, Polar Seafood participated in the BestLife 2030 project in 2025. The project collected data on the volume and composition of bycatch in the lumpfish fishery and worked to make bycatch reporting easier for individual fishers.
