The snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) is becoming increasingly popular, not least due to the low content of fat and calories but also the high protein levels. It has much in common with the larger king crab, possessing a fine white meat with a firm texture and delicate flavour which both characterise the snow crab.

Polar Seafood is producing snow crab in Greenland and Norway. In Greenland, the snow crab is caught by small fishing boats, using the traditional method of crab pots, before being processed into sections at our snow crab factory in Nuuk. In Norway, the production takes place at sea on factory vessels operating in the Barents Sea.

We freeze our snow crab sections in brine and grade them into various sizes. The most common snow crab size for both Greenland and Norway is 5-8oz although they can be seen as large as 14oz+ in Norway.

Habitat

The snow crab can be found all the way from West Greenland to the Gulf of Maine and again in the Barents sea from West of Novaja semja to Svalbard. It lives in water depths from 20 metres down to more than 300 metres. The habitat is often identical to that of prawns which often constitutes a challenge in avoiding fishing gear collisions.

Suitable for a large variety of serving suggestions

Cooked snow crab is very versatile in the kitchen. It is popular to eat just as it comes, perhaps with a squeeze of lemon and a dash of mayonnaise, but is also well-suited for salads, soups and many other dishes.
