Lumpfish

We catch lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) off the coast of West Greenland and process the fresh and delicate roe. The lumpfish is caught in gillnets, set in the coastal zone, landed to processing plants within hours of catch. Polar Seafood's lumpfish fishery obtained MSC status in August 2015.

Habitat

For the majority of the year, the lumpfish is pelagic and occasionally seen in pelagic trawls. Come spring, the males seek shallower waters in West Greenland and prepare a “nest” for the arrival of the females a few days later. Spawning takes place at water depths down to approx 75 metres.
